Mini sessions benefit Gadsden State students

It’s not too late to apply to Gadsden State Community College for fall classes thanks to mini session course offerings.

“Students who missed traditional registration in August still have the opportunity to take courses they need during the mini session,” said Dr. Teresa Rhea, dean of Enrollment and Retention. “They will take classes in a shorter timeframe but they will still have the same number of instruction hours.”

Gadsden State’s mini session this fall is from Oct. 11 until finals week, which is Dec. 10-14. Some mini session classes require attendance four days a week while other classes can be done completely online. Instruction is completed in a seven weeks or less.

“Students are in an accelerated-learning environment, which allows them to focus intensively on the class they are taking,” Rhea said.

It’s also an opportunity for students to take a prerequisite for a course needed in an upcoming semester.

“It can lighten the load for the next regular semester,” she said. “And, it could give the student the opportunity to graduate earlier than expected.”

Students attending other colleges or universities can enroll in Gadsden State’s mini sessions.

“During summer break, students can attend our traditional classes or enroll in online classes,” Rhea said. “They save money while completing credits that put them closer to graduation. Gadsden State’s tuition rate of $160 per credit hour for in-state students is more affordable than tuition at other universities.”

Students from other colleges should contact an advisor to ensure the credits will transfer to their home university. The Advisement Resource Center can be reached at 256-549-8307.

Other mini sessions planned for the 2018-19 academic year are Jan. 9-March 4, March 5-May 6, May 8-23, May 29-July 2 and July 3-Aug. 7.

Registration for the current mini session is from Oct. 8-12. Tuition is due Oct. 15.

Traditional classroom courses available during the upcoming mini session include Introduction to Technical Drawing, Principles of Industrial Maintenance Welding and Metal Cutting Techniques, Advanced Programmable Logic Controllers, Workplace Skills, Make and Take, Network Lab, Cisco CCNA IV, Licensure Exam Review, Support for Intermediate College Algebra, Intermediate College Algebra and Human Growth and Development.

Online courses are available in Art Appreciation, Legal/Social Environment Business, Microcomputer Applications, Principles of Macroeconomics, English Composition I, United States History I, Mathematical Applications and Theatre Appreciation.

Courses that are available in the traditional classroom or online are Music Appreciation, Fundamentals of Oral Communication, Principles in Biology II, English Composition II, Orientation to College and General Psychology.

Like those taking full-semester classes, mini session students are reminded that they can receive free tutoring services at the Cardinal Tutoring Centers located on the Wallace Drive, Cherokee and Ayers campuses. Free tutoring is also available online.
